Escaped Prisoner
Sir, —May I voice a protest and ask a question? Would the powers that be enlighten me and my fellow taxpayers why the Australian prisoner, recently at large, should be the guest of the New Zealand Government?—Yours, etc, E. M. SMITH.
July 6, 1967. [The acting-Secretary for Justice (Mr E. A Missen) replies: “This man was convicted of offences committed in New Zealand and was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment in the Magistrate’s Court, Auckland. The Magistrate, when passing sentence, recommended that he be deported at the expiration of the sentence. It is the practice in cases where deportation is ordered for the prisoner to serve his sentence before being deported. This is aimed at discouraging persons coming to this country and committing crimes in the expectation that they would suffer nothing more than deportation if convicted.”]
