WELLINGTON, July 11. Pompallier House, which was built at Russell in 1841 by Bishop Pompallier, New Zealand’s first Roman Catholic bishop, will now be controlled and managed by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust

Bought by the Government in 1943, the building has been administered by the Internal Affairs Department

It has now been reserved for historic purposes under the Reserves and Domains Act 1953. Early French activities, both secular and religious will be portrayed in one of the rooms of the house. Another room will be furnished according to the standards and tastes of one of the early owners.
