MELBOURNE DISCOVERY
Bones 31,000 Years Old
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, July 7.
Animal bones and stone implements found at Keiior, an outer suburb of Melbourne, are 31,000 years old, experts say. Archaeologists say the discovery puts evidence of human life on the Australian mainland back by more than 6000 years. The previous earliest discovery dated it back to 25,000 years. The Archaeology Society of Victoria has released details of carbon tests carried out on the bones and stone implements found at Keiior this year. The bones were identified by the national museum and the carbon tests were held at the Canberra Institute of Aboriginal Studies.
Experts said the bones belong to the giant marsupial lion, giant kangaroo, giant wombat and Tasmanian tiger. The giant kangaroo stood 10ft high and the wombat was as large as an elephant
