RACING Bagush In Favour At Manawatu Hunt

"The Pt css” Special Service

PALMERSTON NORTH.

With weather conditions improving steadily, indications are that the track will be soft and cutting out for the Manawatu Hunt Club’s annual meeting at Awapuni today. This should favour Bagush in his attempt on the Hunt Cup Steeplechase, the feature jumping event at the fixture.

Bagush, on trial for the Wellington Steeplechase, would need only to win today to emerge as a big rival for Kumai at Trentham.

Kumai, still ’he reigning favourite for the Wellington Steeplechase, will complete his race preparation with a run in the Winter Handicap, first leg of the main double. He is in dashing form, having run right away from Laramie in his final gallop. The mile may be a little short for Kumai, which is not a smart beginner. However, his trainer, H. Anderton, expects the grey to race prominently and it would be no real surprise if he were to fill a place. The leading first leg contender is Royal Theme, trying to qualify for a start in the Whyte Handicap. He is at his peak for the race, having pleased in his final work. A close relative of Somain, Royal Theme seems likely to make a big name for himself this year. The second leg will be the Tararua Plate for hacks, in which fancies could cover a wide range. The last start winner, Sacimo, running on his home track, may win. By Alcimedes, Sacimo is a four-year-old stallion which should be at his best over a mile.

R. J. Skelton will be riding at the meeting where his mounts include Bijali, Lady Colleen and Royal Beau. The best of these should be Bijali, likely favourite for the first leg.

A tiny mare, she may feel her 84, but she has good form, having run second at each of her three latest starts. W. D. Skelton will ride Three Kings in the main race and, although it is only his second run after a long spell, he could cause an upset. He won a Parliamentary Handicap and he can sprint well in soft ground. Fields:—
