Italian Leading Tour de France

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright)

AMIENS (France).

An Italian rider, G. Polidori, became the third different leader within three days in the Tour de France cycle marathon.

Polidori, of the Italian B team, was one of a group of 11 riders who arrived more than two minutes ahead of the rest of the field at the end of the 154-mile third stage from Caen to Amiens. The stage winner was M. Basso (Italy) one of Polidori’s team-mates.

Polidori modestly said: “This is my first tour and I am only here, to learn.” With little difference yet in over-all times, all 11 riders in the leading group went to the top of the general classification. Tour favourites such as F. Gimondi (Italy), R. Poulidor (France) and J. Janssen (Holland) are all lower than twentieth in the race standings.

But there are 19 more stages to go before the threeweek, 3000-mile tour ends in Paris, and they are clearly saving themselves for the stiffer battles ahead in the Pyrenees and the Alps. The first really testing stage is the next when the riders will cross the cobbled roads of Northern France to Roubaix, a stretch known to cyclists as “the northern hell” because of the bad state of the roads.
