Axemen Break With Union
(N.Z. Press Association) GREYMOUTH.
After 61 years as an affiliated centre to the New Zealand Athletic, Cycling and Axemen’s Union, the West Coast centre decided at its annual meeting on Saturday to resign from the body. This follows years of dissatisfaction with the set-up of the national body. It was felt by the delegates that, as the bushcraft events were the mainstay of the union, there should be an independent body controlling these events and the West Coast Axemen’s Centre was formed.
It Is not expected that the break will cost H. Gilsenan his place In the New Zealand axemen’s team to compete in Canada, but the position of West Coast men who have regularly won posts In the New Zealand team against Australia at the Royal Sydney Show every Easter, is uncertain. The West Coast Cash Cycling Club faces extinction and has had to cancel the South Island 25-mile road championship it was to conduct next week.
