SAIGON, July 3.
American Marines early yesterday caught North Vietnamese troops trying to storm the key bastion of Con Thien, just below the North-South Vietnamese border.
The United States troops today continued the battle, using giant bombers, tanks and bayonets and claim to have smashed a major offensive, in which 2500 enemy troops are said to be involved. Fifty-one Americans were killed.
The opponents had tried swarming in at dawn, United States officials said. Two outnumbered Marine companies went out to meet them and stopped them. When the North Vietnamese some caught in a trap, tried to storm through, tanks cut them down. American commanders then unleased the full weight of their artillery and air strikes to check the push by the North Vietnamese.
After major enemy troop units were located near the battlefield the United States commanders ordered in Stratofortresses.
The planes, the biggest weapon in America’s Vietnam arsenal, dumped hundreds of tons of explosives on the enemy.
