LYTTELTON POOL
Council Seeks Report
A motion of no confidence in the committee that has been working for three years to provide a swimming pool for Lyttelton was not adopted by the Lyttelton Borough Council last night. Moving the motion, Cr G. C. Adams said that a pool was a necessity for the town. The committee had been going into the question without much success, and the council should take over.
Cr. R. H. Duff said that the proposed pool would cost £22,000. If £1 for £2 came from the Golden Kiwi lottery funds, it would leave £14,000 for the town to find.
The greatest fund-raising scheme could not hope for more than £4OOO. A loan would not qualify for a lottery grant, and council funds at this stage were not available. Eventually the council might be able to help. The committee was set up by the public and had nothing to do with the council, said Cr. N. D. Parratt. A possible site had been found and the committee was not inactive. The council decided to ask the committee to supply it with a full report.
