BLAST IN LAGOS

Police H.Q. Missed

(N.Z.P.A. -Reuter—Copyright)

LAGOS, July 3.

Saboteurs tried to blow up the Lagos police headquarters with a car-load of explosives last night and killed at least four persons in the attempt. Police sai dthe dead were all in a house opposite the five-storey police building. The house was ripped apart by the blast.

The police headquarters itself was only slightly damaged, as was a private hospital nearby. Eleven persons were injured by the blast, sources at Lagos civil hospital said. At least one of them was from the 50-bed private hospital next to the demolished house. The four dead were reported to be two adults and two children sleeping in the house.

The bomb attempt was made about half a mile from Dodan barracks, headquarters and residence of the Nigerian Army ruler, Major-General Yakubu Gowon.

General Gowon declared a state of emergency a month ago when the Eastern region broke away as the self-pro-claimed state of Biafra. He is in the final stages of mobilisation for a threatened military attack on the breakaway state.
