Feiramor Impressive In Hastings Win

“The Press” Special Service

HASTINGS.

Feiramor’s dashing win in the Longlands Handicap at Hastings on Saturday drew attention to his prospects in the Whyte Handicap at Trentham.

Although he had not started since winning the Great Easter Handicap at Riccarton on March 27 and had been troubled the previous week by a filled leg, he proved much too good for the smart hack graduate, Royal Theme, and beat him by a length. Some of Feiramor’s best form has been shown at a mile. Earlier this season he ran third in the Churchill Stakes, second to Tara’s Pride in the CJ.C. Jockey Club Handicap, third to Rohe Potae and Surf Boy in the Pearce Handicap and second to Loofah in the President’s Mile at Masterton.

The Masterton trainer, T. L. Jennings, produced Feiramor at peak fitness on Saturday. The Agricola four-year-old was allowed time to settle down well back in the field early. J. A. Messent moved him up to third at the halfmile and second behind Dunraven turning for home. Feiramor soon went to the front and though Royal Theme finished fast, he was being held by Feiramor in the last 100 yards. Feiramor carried 9st 21b, so his performance was outstanding.

E. Ropiha, who had earlier qualified Fans for a Parliamentary Handicap start with success in the Te Mata Handicap, was trying to qualify Royal Theme for a run in the Whyte Handicap and he was unlucky that he did not succeed.

Royal Theme drifted back In the early running and then, when trying to improve, he was held up and forced to change ground near the three furlongs when Bravest weakened and drifted back through the field.

H. N. Rauhihi, who won the Te Mata Handicap on Fans, earned a day’s suspension through allowing Fans to move in and crowd Surf Boy and Whakamoa about a furlong from the finish. i Whakamoa seemed to be 'the main sufferer because he could not get through a gap on the outside of Shogun. There is no doubt he would have been closer to Fans at the line had he not been hampered. However, he would not have beaten Fans, which was much superior over the final furlong and won by three and a half length from Whakamoa with Surf Boy threequarters of a length further back.

Fans ended an exasperating sequence of minor placings on a note that suggested he could test the best of the stayers in the Parliamentary and Winter Oats Handicaps. Far Cry, fourth, and GayIlan. which ran fifth, were responsible for sound efforts hut Shogun, which went to th* front at th« threa then

faded over the last furlong, did not run on nearly as well as he had done the first day. One of the most sensational incidents in a day ot exciting racing was the abject failure of Eiffel Tower, which finished second-last in the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles after giving a very poor display of jumping. Carlynn, which won the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles, dearly outstayed the recent hack graduate, False Problem, and enhanced his prospects for the main hurdles races at Trentham.

However, False Problem was definitely unlucky. He went to the front about half a mile from home, then hit the second last fence very hard. Though he led Carlynn over the last fence, he was obviously shaken and faded when challenged. Eiffel Tower’s failure in the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles was compensated for, to some extent by Koral’s brilliant win in the Hastings Steeplechase. He gathered in the dashing pacemaker Macquarie, shortly after entering the last halfmile and won by seven lengths. It was a great trial for the Wellington SteepleMacquarrie, which jumped indifferently on the first day, was responsible for an exhilarating display of leaping out in front for two and a quarter miles. Although beaten easilv by Koral, he held off the Hawke’s Bay Steeples winner, Linred, by five lengths. Results:—
