Last Day For Form II Pupils To Pick Schools
The last of an estimated 3810 Form II pupils will today) complete their applications to enter the third forms of the I 13 State secondary schools in! Christchurch next year. Applications must reach the schools today to be considered 1 in the first round of and rejections. The number of pupils in all classes at these schools next' year is expected to be 12,600, although this figure could reach 12,750 if the present trend for more pupils to stay longer at school continues. However, there will be no shortage of accommodation. There will be 13,400 places available next year in present and planned buildings at these schools. The total rolls, in returns made on March 1 this year, were 12,307. Most pupils will get into the schools of their first choice. Those who do not will be able to seek another in applications closing on August 1. When first-round acceptance and rejection notices are sent out on July 19, schools with vacancies will be listed. After the rapid increase of
numbers in the early 19605, when two new high schools a year were opened ‘at one period, Christchurch secondary schools are now on a “plateau" of fairly stable rolls. No new schools are expected to be required before 1970. After that rolls will rise sharply again. To meet that need, the Christchurch secondary Schools’ Council and the Education Department are considering whether more schools should be built or whether some existing schools in areas of pressure should be allowed to accommodate 1600 pupils.
