“FREEZING” OF WAGES

Union Attacks Employers

Employers were trying to force all applications for new industrial awards into the Arbitration Court, said the general secretary of the New Zealand Freezing Workers’ Association (Mr F. E. McNulty) yesterday. This pattern, he said, had been set for printers, plumbers, freezing workers, drivers

and automotive mechanics,

among others. In the last week or so, no settlement had been reached in conciliation coun-

cil talks on awards for these workers.

His association, he said, 1 fully supported the contention ' of the Federation of Labour 1 that employers were applying 1 a wage freeze in award nego--1 tiations. ■ If this were continued It must lead to a breakdown in conciliation and arbitration, and would also introduce widespread industrial dishar- ' mony. It was hoped that in September, when the adjourned negotiations for a new New i Zealand freezing workers’ > award would be resumed the employers would take a reali istic view to enable the freezi ing workers to have a new [ award before the start of the next export killing season.
