AUSTRALIA’S MARKETS

Japan Goes To Top Place

Japan had become Australia’s No. 1 export market, said the Australian Government Trade Commissioner in the South Island (Mr D. Ryan) on Monday evening. Japan had just passed Britain as an importer of Australian goods. Australian exports to the United Kingdom in 1965-66 declined by 7) per cent Mr Ryan said that in spite of this Australia still substantially depended on British trade. Nearly fourfifths of Australia’s trade with Britain in 1965-66 was on a “British preferential” basis.

Although the percentage of Australia’s trade with the United Kingdom dropped in 1965-66, the value of Australian trade with Britain for the same period was up to 475 million dollars. This was a slight increase on the previous year.

Mr Ryan denied that Australia had diversified its exports to such an extent in recent years that it no longer needed a strong British export market Britain was almost the same as Japan, with the United States third a long way back.
