RUTHERFORD LECTURER

Sir Harrie Massey

Sir Harrie Massey, Quain professor of physics at University College, London, since 1950, will give the Rutherford memorial lectures in New Zealand in October. Under the trust, the lectures are held in different Commonwealth countries in turn. In New Zealand, the first lecture is given at the University of Canterbury (where Lord Rutherford began his physics studies) and the second at a North Island university. Sir Harrie Massey will speak in Christchurch on October 6 on nuclear physics today and in Rutherford’s day.

Before this lecture, the Canterbury University physics department will hold several “open nights” in the week beginning September 11. This will be the first public showing of the new facilities and the department’s teaching and research.

The programme will be:— Monday, University Council and staff of all departments: Tuesday, learned societies and professional organisations: Wednesday and possibly Thursday, members of the public.
