VILLAGES RENAMED
Bad Jokes By
Tsarists
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MOSCOW, June 27.
What is in a name? To the unhappy inhabitants of Eyesore, Swlny and Speakeasy, a century or more of embarrassment and hard feelings. The Legislature of the Russian Federation has answered their complaints by giving the village of Eyesore the new name of Greenville, changing Swiny to Fieldville and altering Speakeasy to Woodward.
The name changes were part of a continuing drive to erase the memories of bad jokes perpetrated by Tsarist landlords.
Landlords who owned entire villages liked to express their disdain for them and their inhabitants by giving them such names as Belly Button, Ulcer, Pigpen, Liar’s Nest, Swineroo and Rotten Hole.
