Tinsel Sprints Attractively

"The Press" Special Service

HASTINGS.

Tinsel, which is engaged in the Te Mata Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double on the final day of the Hawke’s Bay winter meeting on Saturday, impressed in a six-furlong gallop at Hastings yesterday.

Dunraven, narrowly beaten in last week’s Mahora Handicap and top-weight for the Longlands Handicap on Saturday, pleased in a half-mile gallop, and Backfire looked very fit when he did two rounds of easy pacework. The Hawke’s Bay Hurdles topweight, Eiffel Tower, galloped a mile with Arleigh. He appeared to be in hard condition. MOST ATTRACTIVE

The course proper and the plough offered perfect winter going. On the course proper, where the trestles were the proper distance out from the rail, Tinsel (B. S. Dodds) ran six furlongs alone in Imin 18 4-ssec, the last three in 37 2-ssec. She worked most attractively. Royal Cabana (C. Hercock) and Tosh (M. Donoghue) ran five furlongs in Imin 8 2-ssec, the last three in 41 sec.

Bold Invader (G. McLeish) galloped a mile, the last six in Imin 22sec, and the last three in 41 2-ssec.

Vinous (T. Whittington) and Bondi (B. L. Cullen) sprinted five furlongs in Imin 3 2-ssec, the last three in 39 2-ssec. NEEDED RACE

Achates (T. Whittington) was travelling well alongside Golden Guy (K. Cullen) on completion of six furlongs in Imin 16 4-ssec, the last three in 40sec. Golden Guy needed his race on the first day.

On the plough, Damar (T. Whittington) covered five furlongs in imin 7sec, the last three in 40 3-ssec. He will resume in the Longlands Handicap.

Vigour (G. Constable), which needs heavier ground, and Noir Filou (R. B. Marsh), took Imin ssec for five furlongs, the last three in 39sec. Eiffel Tower (W. Hillis) and Arleigh (Lewis) worked over 11 furlongs together, the last mile in Imin 55 2-ssec, and the last three in 41 2-ssec. Arleigh was allowed to run a length or two ahead most of the way, but Eiffel Tower was travelling easily at the line. Golden Rebel (F. Grantham) and Box (I. D. Lawson) ran six furlongs in Imin 19 sec, the last three In 39 2-5 sec, and they hit out freely. WORKED EASILY

Humber (M. Miritana) worked easily over five furlongs in Imin llsec, the last three in 43sec. Patsy’s Pride (J. T. Anderson) and False Problem (Horne) covered a round in Imin 50sec. the last three in 42 2-ssec. They were not extended and it was a good workout. Dunraven (K. Cullen) worked pleasingly over an easy halfmile in 52 4-ssec, the last three furlongs in 40sec. Dunraven may be ridden by an apprentice this week in the Longlands Handicap. FIT HORSE Surf Boy looking very flt, did pacework as did Backfire. Redaire also did pacework. She bears a healthy appearance. It seems she was in season the first day and this could account for her disappointing showing. Whakamoa, a close second to Shogun last week, pulled during his pacework. He is at peak and should be the big danger jin the Te Mata Handicap.

Nuihau (K. Cullen) worked freely over half a mile in 51 sec, the last three in 38 l-ssec. He ran a great race last week.

Tudor Lad, a smart two-year-old which developed noticeably during a spell, did quiet work and so did Mondy. FINE DISPLAY

Homespun (C. Hercock) and Kaimoi Star (G. McLeish) jumped five hurdles. Homespun, a winner twice tn hack hurdles class on his recent northern trip, gave a brilliant display of fast, clean jumping.

Golden Rebel <W. Wilson), Box (I. D. Lawson) and Kobe (P. Waaka) jumped six hurdles safely.
