CLERGY’S PAY
Wellington Increases
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 27. The Anglican Diocesan synod decided in Wellington today to raise the minimum stipends for its clergy by amounts varying from £5O to £2OO including £5O expenses. The synod took this action in spite of a warning that it would “smack of self-interest” and in spite of several suggestions that the church could give a lead on salary increases in the country’s present economic state. The new stipend scale means that the minimum for vicars, pastors and hospital chaplains goes up from £lOOO a year to £ll5O a year, plus £5O expenses. Curates’ stipends go up, for example, to £775 for a single deacon (formerly £700), or £875 for a married deacon (formerly £750).
Regional Talks.—New Zealand will be represented at the July ministerial meeting of Aspac (Asian and Pacific Co-operation) in Bangkok by the Minister of Housing (Mr Rae).—(P.A.).
