Shunters Short
The railways were short of shunting staff in Christchurch, said a Railways official yesterday. He was commenting on an advertisement, offering jobs to former shunters, traffic assistants, or other suitable young men. So far about 40 had applied and a few who were suitable had been picked out, he said. The reason why the railways was seeking former shunters or traffic assistants, was that more use could be made of them than of untrained men.
Shunting staff were required to be particularly active, and not just anybody could be taken for the job, he said.
