FARMS AND SCHOOLS

Integration In Class Work

“An experiment in liaison in rural education” is the title given to a scheme by which the Christchurch Teachers’ College will try to relate farming life more closely to country school work.

For the fortnight beginning today the principal lecturer in science (Mr D. Beggs) will visit schools from Yaldhurst to Lake Coleridge to propound the idea that “learning becomes real and meaningful when it is firmly grounded in the day-to-day experiences of children.” To do this Mr Beggs will encourage schools to make regular class visits to home farms and base work in the classroom on everyday experiences. Such studies are already held in many schools but Mr Beggs believes they can be developed to further stimulate language, art, and social studies.

Eventually it is hoped that this “environment-centred” work will be expanded to involve Teachers’ College students, staff, science advisers, and class teachers in programmes extending from infant classes to form four.
