Carlton Still Lead In Women’s Hockey

In spite of a draw with Digbys, Carlton was able to retain its slender lead when the second team, Harewood, was held to a draw by University. With only one point separating the top five teams the result of the competition is still very open. Results in the seventh round:— Carlton 1, Digbys 1. Harewood 1, University 1. Rawhiti 5, Burnside 0. Aranui 5, Hornby 1. Points are: Carlton 5, Harewood 4s, Rawhiti 4j, Digbys 4. Aranui 4, Hornby 3, University 2, Burnside 1 Carlton-Dlgbys Although Carlton enjoyed a territorial advantage in this match it was unable to produce the finish to its movements which would have led to goals. Much of its trouble appears to stem from poor trapping by its forwards in mid-field, but allied to this is a failure to take advantage of scoring opportunities. Inaccurate shooting and slow following-in proved to be costly errors in the circle. A. Judson was her team’s best forward, but her chances were limited by Carlton's failure to build up right-flank attacks. S. Comer played another sound game at centre-half with accurate passing and sound covering, but both wing halves tended to cover too slowly and S. Thompson’s tendency to tackle the inner allowed her wing too much leeway. L. Drummond showed improved form in the backs with sound tackling and accurate passing. For Digbys B. Makinson played soundly in goal while M. Healey at left-half was re- ; sponsible for some vital covering on detep defence. Harewood-University In a fast, exciting match in which attack was matched by. quick counter-attack. Harewood 1 was held to a draw by the improving University team. Harewood’s outstanding player was L. Rutledge at right inner 1 who was not only responsible I for a tremendous amount of work on defence, but also was the initiator of most of her ’ team’s attacks. ’

Harewood’s strategy was to use quick accurate through passing or inner to inner passing in an attempt to cut out the University centre-half A. McKenna. and this manouvre was largely successful, although many of the attacks broke down because of the sound positioning of the University backs, L. Mcßllister and J. Fright. L. Baylis combined well with L. Rutledge and S. Turner and J. Rutledge and S. Turner and J. Scebeck on the wings were responsible for some dangerous breaks. Harewood’s best defender was M. Poulsen at left half who covered well and whose trapping and passing was always sound. S. Lynch marked closely at centre half. L. Rutledge scored for Harewood. and L. Bailey scored for University. Aranui-Hornby Aranui's speed and combination in the forward line enabled them to maintain cons-

tant pressure on Hornby’s goal, and only a fine display of goalkeeping by S. Cusden kept tbe score down. . The inside forward trio of S. Cowles, J. Davies and W. Stock back-tackled well and their quick passing revealed weaknesses in Hornby’s defence. F. Thompson on the right wing made some fast breaks, as did D. Farrar on the left wing and she was rewarded for quick following-in by scoring two good *°On* defence, R. Eastwick trapped and passed well at centre half and provided close support on attack, while F. Musson was again the mainstay on deep defence. The main weakness Is the failure of the wing halves to retreat quickly on defence to provide vital cover‘lranul’s goals were scored by J. Davies. S. Cowles. W. Stock and D. Farrar. J. Millard scored for Hornby. Rawhlthßurnslda In a game in which neither team displayed its best form, Rawhiti defeated Burnside by a comfortable margin. For Rawhiti. H. Walker and J. Hayes were the best of the forwards. trapping and passing more accurately than did their colleagues, although the latter tended to delay her centre pass for too long. The forwards were quick to sieze chances in the circle. A. Rouse provided close support on attack and effectively dominated midfield proceedings.

Although Burnside had spells on attack, lack or flnish in their circle cost them scoring chances. M. Mouat back-tackled well. The team, however, had long spells on defence and here the sound trapping and covering of the backs, L. Otten and G. Falloon, was of great value. Rawhltl’s goals were scored by A. Bouse, J. Watson and H. Walker. LOWER GRADES Senior Reserve Harewood 2, Teacher’s Cole&nlversity 3, West Old Girls Shirley 2, Dlgbys I. Cranmer 3, Burnside 0. Second Grade Teachers’ College 2, Rawhiti 1.
