“We can only reply that, owing to circumstances outside our control, we cannot accept the offer,” said the chairman (Mr W. IL Campbell), when the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board, at was offered two properties in Elgin street, Sydenham. The board, considering the rebuilding of the Sydenham fire station, -is unable now to go ahead because of a Fire Service Council ban on capital spending.
Writers Compete. lole Clarke won first prize in a feature article competition conducted by the South Island Writers’ Association recently. The competition was judged by Mr G. Burns, editor of the Christchurch “Star.” Rosemary Brittain was second, and Frances Hacquoil was third. i
