Soil Biologist Seeks Military Postponement
His research into soil ] biology bad reached, some- i what unexpectedly, a state in > which daily attendance was necessary, a Ph.D. student, G. ’ W. Yeates, told the No. 14 i National Military Training Postponement Committee. Yeates also said, in support ' of his application for an indefinite' postponement, that if the work, which had the financial support of the University Grants Committee and the Nuffield Foundation, were to be interrupted, it could conceivably take years to regain the present position. The committee, Messrs J. R. Williams (chairman), C. R. Thomas and H. F. Larsen (members), W. J. Moore (Crown representative), and T. C. Currie (secretary), refused Yeates’s application but granted him an adjournment for 12 months. I. B. Brown, who told the committee that he had been running a motor repair garage on his own account since October last year, was allowed a postponement for 12 months. Brown also said that be employed one person, besides himself, had a five-year lease on his premises, and still owed £4OO. “I could not afford to go into camp yet,” he said. A farmer, G. C. Barr, said I that he wanted a postponement because his father was in ill health, receipts for wool - and crops had lessened, and the business could not afford i to pay a manager. He was ' granted a postponement for ’ 12 months. In other cases, in which I the applicants appeared, the : following decisions were ■ made: H. J. Bowley, six ■ months’ postponement; J. S.
