ROME, May 29.

The French avant-garde writer, Jean Genet, was recovering in hospital at Domodossola, northern Italy, today after taking an overdose of pills followed by cognac. Mr Genet, who is on holiday in this alpine town, was found unconscious In his bed on Friday by hotel staff. Domodossola police said he told them that the previous night he had been unable to sleep. He had taken two extra tranquilisers on top of his usual dose, and then drunk a glass of brandy.

His doctor said that the combination of sedatives and alcohol had resulted in a slight heart attack.
