‘lncrease After Overtime Cuts’

(N.Z. Preet Association) WELLINGTON, May 30.

Cuts in overtime for railway workshops had resulted in the spending of more overseas exchange on the purchase of rolling stock, the secretary of the Railway Tradesmen’s Association (Mi A. G. Goldsmith.) said today. “Railway morale is suffer ing as some of the best tradesmen and railwaymen in the world see orders unnecessarily going overseas,” he said.

“Large sections of railway workshops and much valuable equipment lie idle because there is little competition foi railway employment In any case, the railways are now required not to recruit new employees except in certain restricted groups.” Considerable overseas funds could be saved if reasonable overtime were re-introduced and if sufficient staff to do the work were recruited.
