TN the last few years, sauna baths, and 1 especially the indoor home saunas, have boomed on the popularity list; They are now found in many countries beyond their homeland, Finland, where it all began over 1000 years ago.
It was. and to a certain extent still Is. a sacred cult In that far northern country. Very basically, this is what happens. A person enters a sauna bath, perspires profusely, undergoes a beating with birch whisks made from tree twigs of that supple tree and finally cools off with a plunge in the nearest cold waterl In Finland, this is still the way. But tn many other countries the birch whisk is difficult th obtain so alternatives are found in rough band mittens made from cotton and strips of towelling made from eoarse material These have the same effect by massage movements as the birch whisk they stimulate the circulation until the akin is glowing with health.
