Cook’s Coat In Museum

(JV.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, May 28. A magnificent flowered silk waistcoat, believed to have been owned and worn by Captain James Cook, has been given to the country by Mrs T. L. Matthews, of Buckinghamshire, England. The beautifully embroidered and sequinned, eight-eenth-century garment has been received by the Dominion Museum from the New Zealand High Commissioner in London (Sir Thomas Macdonald). The waistcoat was taken from a house where the world famous navigator ilved. Mrs Matthews, a sister-in-law of a former president of the New Zealand Women’s Association in London, Mrs G. Matthews, says the garment at one time had a document attached confirming its authenticity. This, however, has been lost in the intervening years.
