REMARK BY LAWYER

“Unwarranted Charge” The Canterbury Shop Assistants’ Union would fully discuss at its next meeting an allegation made in Auckland that nearly 70 per cent of shop assistants stole goods from a firm, said the union’s secretary (Mr B. Alderdice) on Friday. The allegation was made by an Auckland lawyer, Mr M. I. Ramsay, in the Magistrate’s Court. He said the manager of a large Auckland store had told him that nearly 70 per cent of his employees stole goods from the firm.

Mr Alderdice said that unless Mr Ramsay was prepared to substantiate such a charge against one section of the community he was unwise to make it. The charge was unwarranted. Mr Alderdice said he felt he had to speak up in defence of all the hundreds who earned their living honestly as shop assistants. To remain silent under such an attack could mean that the union agreed with this misguided charge.
