Damaged By Fire

Detectives are investigating the possibility that thieves started the fire, which caused £5OO worth of damage to the Christchurch Rugby League Football Club’s rooms at 19 Nova place in the early hours of Saturday. Between 1.15 a.m. and 4 am. thieves broke into the clubrooms and stole 15 halfgallon flagons of beer, valued at £6 3s 9d.

The usual Friday night gathering was held at the clubrooms and everything was in order when the premises were locked up. Soon after 4 a.m. a taxi driver noticed a fire in the rooms, which are behind the Star and Garter Hotel. Two units from the Central station answered the call

Some chairs, 4000 cigarettes, a small oven, a dart board and some other equipment were destroyed. The building was covered by insurance, the club secretin' (Mr A. C. Woodham), said last evening. Many irreplaceable photographs were lost, said the president (Mr D. C. Wilson). The club will celebrate its 21st birthday this year. There have been plans to replace the clubrooms for some time, and new rooms, which will probably be on the present site, will include a dance hall and a gymnasium.
