Roman Consul In Good Gallop

"The Press” Special Service

PALMERSTON NORTH. Roman Consul completed his final trial for the J. A. Betts Memorial at Masterton in good style at Awapunl yesterday. He galloped six furlongs on a heavy course proper with his stablemate. Laramie, which appeared to be going just as well as his companion at the finish, if not better. All tracks were sodden after heavy overnight rain. The Marton visitor, Jonty, enlivened an otherwise dull morning with a brilliant exhibition over six hurdles, proving far too good for Tainoch. The trestles on the course proper were out 70 feet and fast times were impossible. Laramie shaded Roman Consul at the end of six furlongs in Imin 25sec, the last three In 42sec. Both stayers are in excellent heart, and Laramie looks further improved by his race at Foxton.

Jovial Friar was going easily alongside Deep Image at the end of half a mile in 56sec, the last three furlongs in 42sec. Jovial Friar is an improver with a chance in the Juvenile Handicap at Masterton. Mallbar took Imin 25 2-ssec for six furlongs, the last three in 43 4-ssec. She had a bad run at Foxton and may do better in the Hinana Hack Handicap. On the inside trial Tuskar Rock went from the seven furlongs in Imin 35 3-ssec, the

last three in 46 3-ssec. He will need a firm track at Masterton to show his best.

Might, which is fit tor his hurdle debut at Masterton, ran seven furlongs in imin 36sec, the last three in 41sec.

Sir Loin, which will only start at Masterton If the going is good took 54 3-ssec for the last half-mile of his work. Jonty gave a fine display over six hurdles, leading Tainoch all the way. Jonty's exhibition was one of the best from a novice hurdler here for some time. He makes his jumping debut at Wanganui. Lordtuckey did not have a great deal of pace on over six hurdles and gave a fair display. Arlington jumped four hurdles well, and then took two steeplechase fences in his stride.

Grand Coeur and Royal Admiral took two steeplechase fences in good style and so did Foxoman.
