POLICY FOR ADMISSION

Outside Area Patients Conditions under which patients from other board districts were admitted to the board’s hospitals were outlined by the chief medical superintendent (Dr. L. M. Berry) at yesterday’s meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board. On April 30. there were 64 of these patients, or 7 per cent of the beds, in the Princess Margaret, Burwood, Coronation and Christchurch hospitals. There were 16'patients from Ashburton, representing 12 per cent of hospital patients from that town. If a non-resident became ill in Christchurch, he was admitted to one of the board’s hospitals, said Dr. Berry. Ninety per cent of the “outside” patients were in special units, and had been referred to Christchurch for treatment.; The board had arrangements i for this specialist treatment with the adjacent boards.
