MAGISTRATE’S COURT Charges Of Burglary And Receiving Admitted

A man who originally elected trial by jury on a charge of burglary re-elected in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, to be tried summarily, and pleaded guilty. Norman William Bradley, aged 30, a tree topper, was convicted and remanded until May 31 for a probation report and sentence. Mr H. J. Evans, S.M. was on the bench. Bradley also pleaded guilty to charges of receiving from a person or persons unknown a camera valued at £65. a transistor radio valued at £25, and a binocular valued at £l9 9s on May 18; a sewing machine valued at £5O and a television set valued at £lOO between April 1 and April 30: and three chain saws valued at £272, between April 27 and May 4. Sergeant J. D. Farrow said that about 9.50 p.m. on Thursday, May 4, the police went to a garage on the corner of Hereford street and Fitzgerald avenue. A detective saw a man jump over a fence into an adjacent property. The man, who was Bradley, was apprehended, and claimed he had gone to the area with a friend to get a car. Examination showed that locks on the garage had been forced, but nothing had been stolen. On May 19, a house in Linwood was searched and proceeds from burglaries were found. The same day, Bradley was interviewed, and said he had received the goods from other persons. Bradley claimed to have bought two of the chain saws for £2O from some Maoris in a hotel. Other persons Bradley said he had obtained the goods from denied this, said Sergeant Farrow. He said Bradley had not been working for some months, and claimed to have been living off race winnings and the proceeds of the sales of stolen goods. SIX MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT A man, who had already served 10 months' imprisonment for driving while disqualified, was sentenced to a further six months' imprisonment and disqualified from driving for a further year. He is John Arthur Devery, aged 22, a painter, who pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified at Gisborne on April 21. He said he had no explanation to offer. Sergeant Farrow said Devery had been convicted on three previous occasions for driving while disqualified. FIVE CHARGES Michael Patrick Howard, aged 18, an unemployed butcher, was remanded on bail to May 31 for sentence on two charges of driving while dtequalified, one of supplying false information one of exceeding 30 miles an hour, and one of failing to stop for a constable. He pleaded guilty to the first four charges and not guilty to the last. Traffic Sergeant H. J. McMorron said that at 12.55 a.m. on May 14 Howard was checked at 48 miles an hour on Lincoln road near Sunnyside Hospital. He was not carrying his driv-, er’s licence and gave a false name and address. On February 8 Howard had been disqualified for one year and fined £l5 on an assault, charge. Sergeant Farrow said that at 1.20 a.m. on May 17 Howard was seen driving in an erratic manner through Cathedral square in the area reserved for buses. Constable P. J. Fair tried to stop Howard in Colombo street at the Hereford street lights, but he carried, on. A short time later Howard was found in a parked car in Manchester street. He gave a false name at first but then admitted his real identity. He was a married man with one child and had previous convictions. THEFT OF CAR PARTS On a charge of stealing car parts valued at £8 10s on February 11 the property of Joseph William Groom, Boris Mate Barbarich, aged 20, a butcher, was fined £l5 and was ordered to pay witnesses’ expenses of £4. Barbarich, who pleaded not guilty, was represented by Mr M. F. Hobbs. BURGLARY A record player, which had been missing from a Barbadoes street flat, was found by the police in a local second-hand dealer’s shop. As a result, James Murray Hohepa, aged 18, unemployed, was charged with burgling the flat on May 10. He pleaded guilty and was remanded to May 31 for sentence. NAME SUPPRESSED A young woman, whose name was suppressed, was placed on probation for 18 months and fined £2O when she appeared for sentence on three charges of theft of goods from shops in Christchurch on March 1. The goods were valued at £«3. .. Sl l e . was represented by Mr D. M. Palmer. FALSE ADDRESS When he got some petrol from a garage in Nelson, on credit, Laurence David WiHMams, aged 18, gave a false address. He pleaded guMty to a charge of false pretences on January 25 and was fined £2O. ■ Sergeant Farrow said a biU for the petrol sent to the address given by WKildams was returned and then the police were told. ' Mr G. R. Lascelles, who appeared for Wilildams, said the bffll had sdnce been paid. DROVE UNDER INFLUENCE After he was seen to drive in an erratic manner in King Edward terrace, WooCston, on May 16, Trevor Ernest Cowan, aged 26, a slaughterman, was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of drink. He pleaded guilty to the charge and was fined £4O and disqualified from driving for three years. He was also ordered to pay medical expenses of £3 3s. STOLE BICYCLE Anita Diane McKeUa, aged 22, a housewife, wa? convicted and fined £lO and ordered to make restitution of £l2 15s when she pleaded guilty to stealing a bicycle valued at £l5 on July 16, 1966. She was not represented. ESCAPED Shirley Tahiti Williams, aged 17, was remanded in custody to May 31 for sentence when • she pleaded guilty to escaping from custody of the Child Welfare Department on April 8. Sergeant Farrow said she had escaped from custody on five previous occasions. ASSAULTED WIFE Ivan Daniel Laffey, aged 38, an unemployed freezing worker, was convicted and fined £lO for assaulting hte wife, Gwendoline E. Laffey, on May 23. He pleaded guMty. FINED £l5 James Robert Little, aged 23, was fined a total of £l5 on two charges of fallilng to attend an army camp and one of failing to attend a parade, in a reserved decision. Little, who pleaded not guilty, was represented by Mr S. G. Erber. The chargee were heard on Tuesday. The Magistrate said that the • evidence disclosed that Little

had received a letter from the Army stating that the medical examination board had found him unfit for rniditary service and requesting him to return al! Army Clothing. Little was entitled to believe that he had been discharged from the Army when he failed to notify his change o< address. The letter sent to Little by the Army had been a mistake and a letter sent subsequently to Little did not state explicitly that a mistake had been made in the previous letter. However, Little was made aware of his obligations by an Army officer and a constable, the Magistrate said. Lee, S.M.) CHARGES REDUCED A charge of dangerous driving against Roy Keith Ringdale, aged 38, a driver, was amended to one of careless driving and he was convicted and fined £l2. Ringdale (Mr B. J. Drake) denied the charge, which arose from an incident in Christchurch on February 12. Peter Davis, aged 22, a marine electrician, was fined £l2 and was disqualified from driving for one year on a charge of careless driving. An original charge, that he drove dangerously in Memorial avenue on April 15 was denied. Mr R. F. B. Perry appeared for Davis. WlUlam Wayne Wallis, aged 21, a terazzo worker (Mr M. J. Glue) pleaded not guilty to a charge of assaulting a 14-year-old girl with Intent to commit rape on April 22. Leonard Kevin Bradley, aged 34, a driver, pleaded not guiltv and was committed for trlsl on a charge of breaking and entering a garage on the corner of Fitzgerald avenue and Hereford street on Msy 4. Ball was allowed.
