COST PLUS
(N.Z. Press Association) HAWERA, May 22. A move to have the meal charges for nurses at the Hawera Hospital reduced to the same price as meals for members of Parliament in Bellamy’s was defeated at the Hawera Hospital Board’s meeting today. The nurses at present pay 3s a meal, compared with 2s 6d paid by M.P.s in Bellamy’s. Mr J. W Appleton, who put forward the motion for the reduction, said he had been disappointed to learn that the Government and the Opposition, who were urging everyone else to economise, were still getting their meals at less than cost. It was important, Mr Appleton said, for the Government to set the example and not to adopt the attitude “do as we say.
not as we do.” The board’s secretary, Mr B. P. Jackson, said the average cost of meals served to staff at the hospital over the last 12 months was 2s lljd. This included the cost of the food and wages for preparation and serving. The motion was lost. The price of meals in the Hawera Hospital will remain 3s.
