RUNNERS TO TRAIN
Invitation Declined (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The Boston marathon winner, D. C. McKenzie (Greymouth) has declined an invitation to compete in Japan because he wants to develop greater speed before the Olympic Games at Mexico City next year. The secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association (Mr C. I. W. Archibald) said yesterday that both McKenzie and the Tokoroa star, M. R. Ryan, had each declined the invitation to compete in the Kobe marathon on August 30. McKenzie said yesterday that he did not intend competing in any marathons before the Canterbury championship early next year. He said he wanted to develop his basic speed to help him in future marathon events, and that the harrier season provided the time for this. Ryan had withdrawn because he did not feel fit enough to contest the race, said Mr Archibald. Ryan probably had his eyes on the Olympic Games next year, and did not want to over-indulge in marathon races.
