Bellamy’s

Sir,—Thank you for referring my letter to the Minister of Customs and his reply. From this, further argument and wagers developed, (a) Is liquor served ait Bellamy’s similar in size of nips and price to that provided for the general public in hotel bars? (b) If not, is a lower price for food and drink subsidised by the taxpayer?—Yours, etc., STAKE-HOLDER. May 15, 1967.

[The Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) replies: “I referred the matter to the manager of Bellamy’s and he has provided me with the following answers: ‘(a) The size of nips served in Bellamy’s is the same as those served in hotel bars. Prices are fixed by the House Committee and are generally less than those charged in hotels, (b) The prices charged for food and liquor meet the cost of purchasing these supplies as well as the costs of equipment, gas, and other services, but, in accordance with standard practice followed in other Commonwealth Parliaments, certain establishment charges are met from public funds.’ ”]
