MEAT ON FRIDAYS
Reaction In Australia (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) SYDNEY, May 10. Mutton was the main course for lunch at the Roman Catholic Seminary at Stradbroke Park, Adelaide. The Roman Catholic VicarGeneral in Canberra ate a minced meat pie. Two priests on the teaching staff at Melbourne’s Xavier College ate ham rolls, and boys at the school tuck shop bought meat pies. The day was Friday, and Australian Roman Catholics were for the first time enjoying the Pope’s relaxation of the rule of no meat on Fridays. Many Australian Roman Catholics welcomed the move, others said they would stick to meatless Fridays, and more, according to many reports, were worrying about what penance or sacrific they would do instead of abstaining from meat. After the first day of the new move, many Australian butchers reported: “Trade much the same as always.” One said: “It’s too early to say what difference it will make -to the meat trade, but we’re hoping.” A fishmonger said confidently: “Business as usual. A lot of Roman Catholics have told us they’ll continue to eat fish on Fridays.”
