Price Of Cigarettes Up Tomorrow

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, May 9. The price of cigarettes will be raised 6d for 20, and tobacco 1/- for 2oz.

This decision made today by the Price Tribunal results from the recent imposition of extra duty. The increases which affect manufacturers and wholesalers as from tomorrow

come into force in shops on Thursday. The chairman of the tribunal (Mr S. T. Barnett) said that this was an interim decision made necessary by the need to keep shops in supply. The application by wholesalers and retailers for improved margins remained unheard. The decision of the tribunal, which further reduces the margins, was made without prejudice to their right to proceed with the application, said Mr Barnett
