Kalimera’s Good Trial

Kallmera consolidated her position as early favourito for the Amberley Cup with a dashing sprint at Rlccarton yesterday. She showed she had thrived sdnce her last-start win at Blenheim by beating her stablemate, Danny Kaye, over six furlongs on the triad grass. Ridden by G. W. Mein, she was going easily with a lead of about three-quar-ters of a length from Danny Kaye (B. Edens) after running the last half-mile in 51 3-ssec. N. Cowles was engaged for Kallmera in the Amberley Cup soon after her gaMop yesterday. Cowles was able to take the ride at 8-4. Weights of all the acceptors were lifted 31b at acceptance time on Monday when the top-weights dropped out of the field.

Some of Kalimera’s Amberley rivals shaped well tn barrier trials from the five furlongs on the outside of the course proper yesterday.

Tumble, the Amberley Cup top-weight, won one of the trials for open class horses.

Ridden by C. T. Wilson, Tumble showed his fitness for Ms attempt to complete a hattrick in the Amberley Cup In winning the trial by a length from Apparel, which ran keenly for the light-weight, A. H. Eastwood.

Newbrook, which runs against the sprinters at Amberley, was third In this trial.

in a second trial for open class horses there was Little between Even Chance, Allegretto, and Jester Jinks, members of P. H. Jones’s team with engagements at Amberley. Impressive winners of trials for two-year-olds yesterday were Conway Stewart and Sura Light.

They are acceptor! tor the Waipara Handicap at Amberley, but win not meet if the race is run in divisions.

Conway Stewart won the first trial by four lengths in the hands of E. G. Low. The Amberley trainer, C. Coe, rode Sura Light—and Comte de Calais, one of those to chase Conway Stewart home in the first trial.

The fastest mile of the training yesterday was Imin 46 l-ssec run by We’ll Find Out when she easily beat Garwan, Town Talk, and Lovely Clover. Lovely Clover and Town Talk will meet We’ll Find Out again in the hurdles at Amberley. Hamadan (J. Kerkvldet) was too strong for Caprino (E. G. Low) at the end of a mile, and won comfortably by a length in Imin 48 l-ssec. The stablemates, Gold Shower (F. H. Skelton) and May Wyne (P. Craig), recorded Imin 48 3-ssec for their mile, easing to take 55sec for the last half-mile.

Dowling To Train

"The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN. J. R. Dowling has applied for a trainer’s Licence in addition to his jockey’s licence. He has been one of the top riders in i New Zealand since he headed i the list in the 1963-64 season with 70 wins when still apprenticed ■ to D. P. Wilson. He has a property of 24 acres next to the Wingatui racecourse. It was set 1 out as a stud farm and training establishment by the late Mr H. Halliday. Two horses to start off his team are the well-performed Empire King and Penny Road. Empire King, which is raced by Mr W. J. Kenneally, of Tuatapere, has been spelling since he raced at the Wellington meeting in October. Last season, when trained at Otaki, he won three races, including the Kelburn Handicap at the Wellington Cup meeting. Penny Road, a Cassock gelding, will be raced by Dowling’s father, who also lives at Tuatapere. Penny Road’s dam, Beatrix, is an unraced sister to a brilliant galloper, Swayup, whose successes included the 1949 Dunedin Guineas.
