Beach Road Garage

Sir, —When selecting our section for a house in Beach road it was confirmed that it was residential A and that no other buildings would be built. I was even shown town plans as late as two months ago by the Town Surveys office, Worcester street, and confirmed Residential A. I am disgusted that a pleasant newly-developed area can be marred by the building of a garage and filling station. There is an existing garage at Travis road about half a mile from Beach road. It is my hope that you can provide some information as to how residential A can be waived to suit a group of builders who, to my mind, have created a block of sections so that they will have no opposition to the building of a garage in between: that Is, no neighbours yet to object. Is this town planning?—Yours, R. D. WARREN.

April 26, 1967. [The city engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) replies: “The reference to the Town Surveys Office, Worcester street, is not understood. The Regional Planning Authority and the Lands and Survey Department both have their offices in Worcester street but the administration of the district scheme is in the hands of the City Council. The writer is quite correct in assuming that approval has been granted to the establishment of a service station In Beach road, near the new extension of Effingham street. This approval was granted in accordance with the provisions of the Town and Country Planning Act, 1953 and regulations. Before consent can be granted, the applicant is required to publicly notify the proposal twice in a newspaper circulating in the district, giving opportunity for any person to lodge an objection. This particular application was advertised in the public notices column of *The Press’ on August 23 and August 30, 1966. At the same time, a copy of the application is required to be served on persons having a greater interest in the application than the community in general, such as adjoining owners. No objections were received by the council. All other requirements of the Town and Country Planning Act, 1953 and regulations thereto, were complied with in dealing with this application.;']
