CINDERELLA.—This figure from the Central Puppet Theatre, Sofia, Bulgaria, is one of the world-wide collection of puppets described and illustrated In “The Puppet Theatre of the Modem World”—an international presentation in word and picture compiled by the editorial board of the Union Internationale de Marionettes. The book was printed in Frankfurt, East Germany, and the English edition is published by George G. Harrap. The 238 Illustrations include pictures from the puppet theatres of no fewer than 36 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, North and South America, each country contributing touches of national tradition and inspiration. Thus, there is no lack of contrast—for instance, puppets from Indonesia vying for attention with puppets from Hungary, or puppets from Egypt with puppets from India. China and Japan are strongly represented, as are Russia and Poland. The reproduction of excellent black and white and coloured photographs is thoroughly worthy of a subject which in its infinite variety lends itself to the finest printing skills.
