Pilot Injured In Plane Crash
<Neu> Zealand Preu Aeeaeiationf NELSON, May 5. A topdressing aircraft crashed when taking off from a strip at McLarens Bay, near Okiwi Bay, shortly after 2 p.m. today. The pilot, Mr Neville Sommerville, of Cheviot, was flown to Nelson suffering from an injured arm and lacerations and was admitted to the Nelson Public Hospital
He was flying a Piper Pawnee when the motor failed and he crashed into scrub at the end of the runway. Another pilot working for the same company, Aerial Sowing, Ltd., of Canterbury, Mr Dennis Atkinson, of Nel-
son, brought Mr Somerville to Nelson. He was met at the airport by an ambulance. Mr Atkinson, who was piloting a single-seat Cessna, said he did not actually see the accident “I saw a puff of smoke and knew there was trouble.”
