Britain 0-1 To Canada

Canada took a 1-0 lead over Britain on Thursday in their Davis Cup tennis match.
M. Belkin, the Canadian number one, defeated the British number five, M. J. Sangster, 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. The second singles, between the British number one, R. Taylor, and R. Bedard was postponed because of the weather.
The South African, C. Drysdale, suffered a shock defeat at the hands of a virtually unknown Dutchman, J. Hajer, in their Davis Cup match at Scheveningen. Hajer won, 7-5, 10-8, 6-3.
The Australian-born R. A. Hewitt, playing his first match for South Africa, beat T. Okker, 4-6, 6-1, 60, 2-6, 6-2, to level the scores.
In Dusseldorf, West Germany and Russia also were level at 1-1. Russia’s 22-year-old champion, A. Metreveli, beat West Germany’s number two, I. Buding, 7-5, 6-3, 1-6, 97.
The German champion, W. P. Bungert, beat T. Lejus, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5.
Italy won both opening singles against Austria in Verona. N. Pietrangeli beat P. Pokorny, 6-0, 6-3, 6-0, and G. Maioli defeated D. Schultheiss, 6-0, 61, 6-0. Switzerland and Greece were level 1-1, in Geneva. M. Werren (Switzerland) beat P. Gavrilidis, 7-5, 6-2, 6-3, and N. Kalogeropoulos (Greece) defeated D. Studza, 3-6, 6-3, 7-9, 6-2 6-3. France took a 2-0 lead over Norway in Paris. G. Goven beat E. Raastad, 6-0, 6-2, 6-1, and F. Jauffret defeated N. M.- Elvik, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
