Mr Marshall Meets C.A.R.P. Delegation
(New Zealand Pre** AttociaUon) WELLINGTON, May 5. A deputation of representatives of the Wellington and Porirua branches of the Campaign Against Rising Prices today presented a letter to the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Marshall) asking the Government to begin a threepronged attack on rising prices.
The letter, which said the recent Government measures had “hit hardest those least able to afford it,” asked the Government to take stronger measures against profiteering, to reintroduce price control and to stop the importation of luxury goods and unnecessary foodstuffs.
The deputation, led by Mrs M. Findlay, of Wellington, met Mr Marshall about midday and stayed with him nearly an hour. After the meeting the Minister met waiting housewives and their children. He then attended the unsuccessful meeting between the Cabinet Committee on Government Administration and the Combined State Services Organisations on the proposed railway strike. Mrs Findlay said the deputation and the Minister had differed on “virtually every point in our letter. “We got an assurance from the Minister that price control would be introduced if
the Government considered it was absolutely necessary,” she said.
Mrs Findlay said C.A.R.P. had not been able to convince the Minister that price controls were necessary. She said the Minister had asserted that competition by itself was keeping prices down. Mrs Findlay said: “Mr Marshall told us the onus of preventing profiteering lay with the consumer.” The Minister said he would institute action against profiteering when a specific complaint was laid with his department. “We feel the responsibility of preventing profiteering should be with the Govern-
ment and not the consumer," said Mrs Findlay. On the question of cutting Imports of luxury goods and unnecessary foodstuffs, Mrs Findlay said the Minister had indicated that the Government had no intention of cutting luxury imports.
