Unemployed Seamen

At Lyttelton yesterday, 27 members of the Federated Seamen's Union of New Zealand were on the waiting list for jobs. These included 14 able seamen, two ordinary seamen, four deck boys, one extra deck hand, one crew attendant and five motormen.

The waiting list has steadily grown where once it was a regular necessity to call for seqmen from one end of New Zealand to the other. Ships were frequently delayed as a result.

In recent weeks, ships have been laid up for overhaul or because of cargo lack and others have been sold.
