“ISSUES SIMPLE”
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 2. The application of the ruling rate survey plus the Railways Tribunal award did not mean the railways tradesmen would receive 6d an hour more than their counterparts in outside employment, the general secretary of the Railway Tradesmen’s Association (Mr A. G. Goldsmith) said today. In a statement Mr Goldsmith said: “ ‘Fair’ relativity, which the Government called ‘rough justice’ has in fact cost the indentured tradesmen and others in the State services millions of pounds over the survey years. “The Government told our council, and on questioning reiterated, that if the tribunal confirms the 6d at the coming ruling rate survey application, the Government will legislate in June to reduce the powers of the tribunal. He said that the Government intended this action so that at the next succeeding ruling rate survey hearing the tribunal would be forced to withdraw the 6d and would be prevented from making similar awards in the future. Mr Goldsmith said the issues were still the simple ones of honouring and appearing to honour the decisions of a statutory tribunal and refraining from and withdrawing the threat of diminished powers for the tribunal.
