Prospecting Sheep Dogs
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter) MOSCOW. Soviet scientists have trained sheep dogs with an acute sense of smell to locate ore deposits more than 20ft underground, says the Soviet news agency, Tass. Tass said that a dog could be trained to search for ore in less than a year, and could be used to help geologists prospecting. Their training began with finding pieces of iron pyrites with tasty portions of meat attached to them. In time, they could find the pyrites without the meat to attract them.
One dog, named Murat, has a particularly sensitive nose and found rocks containing iron pyrites at depths of up to 65ft.
