Club Squash Improving

After last week’s low standard of squash, it was pleasing to see a return to varied play, with less reliance on wearing out the opponent and more shot making when the A grade competition continued last evening. With two rounds played, Timaru, last year’s winner, leads with 18 points, closely followed by Chester, 16. Other team’s points are: Ashburton 14 .Officers 12, University 10, Worcester 4, Christchurch 4, Collegiate 2. Ashburton beat Christchurch by the odd game which the improving P. Andrews took from E. R. Morris. G. L. Bird and G. A. Davidson were seldom extended in their games, and it appears that Christchurch spectators will not see them at their best in the inter-club competition, as there is no-one of comparable ability to force them to pro-

duce other than occasional flashes of brilliance. The only team to gain 10 points, Officers, was convincing in defeating Collegiate, although G. J. Foulds was forced to default through illness, thus depriving Collegiate of a good chance of 2 points. D. J. Triggs showed good touch against J. H. N. Pine, keeping the play very tight and scoring often with neat drop shots. Triggs was aided by a slow ball and Pine’s lack of real match fitness. J. F. Henderson (University) often overhit in his game with R. D. Monk (Chester), and many rallies were prolonged because Monk was able to recover what should have been winning drives. For Worcester against Timaru, the only winner was R. Taylor, who is having his first season in the A grade. Taylor won well last week, and

his win last evening against the experienced T. P. Kinney, marks him as a player of promise. Results:—
