Clergyman’s Complaint
(Special Crspdt. N.Z P.A )
SYDNEY, April 18. The Rev. Philip Andrews, minister of the Church of Christ at Richmond, Victoria, is frustrated, finds his job futile, and says he is underworked and overpaid. Mr Andrews, married with four children, caused a storm when he made his thoughts public at the annual conference of the Churches of Christ of Victoria and Tasmania last week.
“We’re caught up in an outmoded institution,” he said, “in a little world of clubs for the people of the parish. We propagate the institution when we should be propagating the Gospel. “Too much of what we do is trivial. I am doing very little of the real work a minister should do.” Mr Andrews said the church paid him a weekly stipend of $6O (£24) plus a $5 car allowance and provided a rentfree house.
