LONDON, April 19.
North Island lambs were adjudged better than South Island lambs at a special New Zealand district lamb judging contest held at the Smithfield markets yesterday morning.
Judge* appointed from among leading meat companies described the 483 carcases on show as a “very fine run” but favoured those from the North Island.
Those from the South Island had a slightly heavier covering of fat than those from the North Island said one of the judges, Mr T. F. Huskisson, of Swift and Company. “You wouldn’t describe them as being too fat but in this high class of competition we had to inspect each carcase very, very closely.” Mr Huskisson said he could give no reason for this heavier fat covering of the South Island lambs. Near To Perfect “It was extremely difficult to find fault with any of the carcases on display and when we said in our report that a carcase had slightly too much fat this In no way was meant as criticism as a whole. All those animals on display were commercially excellent and as near to perfect' as anyone could expect.” Mr Huskisson said the carcases were of a higher standard than those generally seen in English butchers’ shops but that the average quality had been improved considerably in recent years. “New Zealand has done a wonderful job in lifting its standards and you rarely hear criticism these days.” S.I. Winners
The South Island district competition was won by Southland, with Nelson second and Marlborough third. McKenzie Bros., Wrights Bush, entered the top South Island pen; P. Gibbs, of Wakefield, took second place; and the Ocean Beach Freezing Company, Invercargill, third place. All 210 carcases entered in the South Island section were bought later in the day by
one of London’s biggest supermarket companies for sale throughout the city.
