TITLES IN SWEDEN
N.Z. Mixed Success (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) STOCKHOLM. The New Zealand team had mixed success in the women’s singles of the world table tennis championships yesterday. The most successful was Mrs N. Traill, the national champion from Whangarei, who had a bye into the second round and then beat the Scottish champion, Miss L. Barrie, 21-13, 21-19, 26-28, 16-21, 21-13, However, Mrs Traill’s third round match with E. Mihalea, of Rumania, could end New Zealand hopes in the women’s singles. Miss Y, Fogarty, the 15-year-old Dunedin schoolgirl, beat B. Warwick (Ireland), 21-6, 21-11, 21-14 in the first round, but was eliminated by the Russian player, E. Golubkova, 19-21, 6-21, 17-21, in the next round.
Miss D. Wade, a 22-year-old player from Tauranga, went down to Sok Cheng Tan (Cambodia), 10-21, 9-21, 4-21, and Miss C. Johnson was beaten, 7-21, 4-21, 15-21 by B. Rattanak (Cambodia). The New Zealand men’s team had a win and a loss in the singles. B. Foster went down to a hard hitting West Germain, E. Ardnt, in the third round, by 21-11, 20-22, 19-21, 21-8, 21-14. Foster had had byes in the first two rounds. However, M. Dunn reached the fifth round, beating P Magnusson (Sweden), 23-21, 13-21, 21-19, 4-21, 21-13 In the fourth round. In the women’s doubles, Mrs Traill and Miss Johnson beat J. Fitzsimmons and B. Warwick (Ireland), 21-12, 21-11, 21-17, and U. Stulen-meyer-Artz and R. Bogmans (Holland) beat Misses Wade and Fogarty 21-19, 21-18, 21-23, 21-3.
