Medical Trust
Sir, —The principle behind the medical trust founded by Lady Fergusson is a commendable one. Any move to provide accommodation for disabled people now forced to remain in institutions is welcome, but £lOO,OOO is a paltry sum for this purpose. At pre-sent-day prices this would not provide beds for more than 30 people throughout New Zealand, and there are many more cases than this urgently requiring relief in Christchurch alone. Because we have a health administration devoid of compassion, too many people are virtually serving life imprisonment in surroundings more hideous than any gaol, for the crime of suffering from low intelligence, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, or even old age.—Yours, etc., VARIAN J. WILSON. April 19, 1967.
